Arsenal are set to hijack Manchester United’s ‘imminent’ transfer of Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, according to German media outlet SportBild.
Reports in recent days have indicated that Louis Van Gaal’s United have a ‘deal in place’ for the German international- but it’s now suggested Arsenal are leading the chase.
The Gunners are said to have held talks with the 24-year-old’s family and are now odds-on to secure a deal, with United dragging their heels due to Gundogan’s injury record.
Gundogan, who is likely to fetch around £21m, announced earlier this season that he would be following Jurgen Klopp out of Dortmund’s exit door this summer and the Premier League has always been a favoured destination.
It seemed United would win the race for his signature, with Van Gaal aiming to complete his business early following the signing of Memphis Depay last week, but the situation appears to have changed.
If Arsenal were to secure the signing, Gundogan would likely occupied a defensive-midfielder role in the Gunners starting eleven, alongside fellow 24-year-old Francis Coquelin.
