Chelsea are eying a move for Atletico Madrid defender Toby Alderweireld, who has spent the season on-loan at Southampton, according to reports in today’s media.
The Belgian star left the Vicente Calderon last summer in search of first-team football, having won La Liga with Atletico the season before, and has impressed vastly during his spell on the South Coast.
His performances have led Chelsea to declare their interest in the player, as a replacement for the ageing John Terry, as the Blues look to snatch the player from under the clutches of the Saints- who are looking to complete a permanent deal after Alderweireld’s successful loan spell.
Chelsea’s Champions League guarantees could play into the mind of Alderweireld, as Southampton may not secure a Europa League place- as should they finish seventh, it would be out of their hands due to Aston Villa’s involvement in the FA Cup final.
Should the Saints finish below Tottenham and Liverpool, with Villa beating Arsenal in the FA Cup, then Ronald Koeman’s side would find themselves without European football next term- which would be a telling blow to their transfer plans.
Chelsea have a strong defensive line, the best in the Premier League, but Jose Mourinho is looking to make his squad more competitive in order to fight on all domestic and European fronts next season.
