Is Ronaldo Truly Better Than Messi?
Written by @VivaFootCalcio
The Ballon D’Or is meant to settle the argument as to who is the best in the world. In recent years Lionel Messi had dominated and he was widely regarded as the best player on the planet. Now, with Cristiano Ronaldo taking the crown, there’s many who say that he is now the best player on the planet- while others are still backing Messi.
Ronaldo’s supreme displays in the Champions League this season fired Real Madrid to their tenth European Cup and ended a drought that has lasted for twelve years. The former Manchester United man only failed to score in one of Real’s 14 games in the competition this season and amassed a record 17 goals.
Compare this to Lionel Messi’s season, which has ended with no silverware and has seen the South American star come under criticism for the first time in his career. Injuries have played their part and there are many concerned stating that we may have seen the best of Messi and that this is the beginning of the decline.
That belief adds fuel to the fire for the battle between Messi and Ronaldo, undoubtably two of the greatest players to ever participate in the beautiful game but we struggle to compare them to greats such as Pele and Maradona.
Those two legends have World Cup trophies to their name, which is often regarded as what holds them higher in the history books than the two current megastars. International form is important to how a player is regarded, but it is not decisive as to a players legendary status. After all, George Best never participated at a World Cup and unfortunately for Wales fans, it’s unlike Gareth Bale ever will too.
However, on the international stage Ronaldo is far superior to Messi. Ronaldo is the shining light of his nation and carried them almost singlehandedly to the World Cup this summer. The Portuguese have an outside chance of success simply down to the fact they have Ronaldo in the squad.
Compare this to Messi and it’s almost embarrassing. The great Barcelona man often fails to replicate his club form on the international stage and it often looks like his nation struggles to fit him in. Messi is a team player, whereas Ronaldo can be regarded as individual.
The question is, which one of those is better? It’s difficult to call, as different times call for a different type of approach. While an individual approach could work in one game, a team effort is needed to decide another.
However, looking in the grand scheme of things it is fair to say that Cristiano Ronaldo is better than Lionel Messi, for various reasons. First of all, Ronaldo has made an impact in more than one nation- as he was great for Manchester United while he played in the Premier League- winning all the trophies available to him- a feat he has now replicated in Spain.
Messi has won everything with Barcelona but the greatest argument against him is that he has only displayed his talent for a Spanish club- while many often argue that he is not the same without Xavi and Iniesta behind him, which could explain his struggles on the international stage.
Ronaldo, as mentioned before, is far superior on the international stage. Messi has the chance to change that this summer with a solid display in Brazil but for now, the argument is settled. Ronaldo is the better player and while this argument is sure to emerge again, Messi has hard work to do in order to reclaim his crown.
