Luton Town Return Is Good For Football League

After a five year absence from league football, Luton Town have secured their return after they clinched the Conference title. The Hatters will be awarded the title after the game with Forest Green, giving the faithful fans the opportunity to celebrate a long-overdue achievement. It’s been far from an easy ride for the Bedfordshire club.

It wasn’t too long ago that the Hatters were plying their trade in the Championship, while battling Liverpool in the FA Cup. Then, money troubles took their toll on the club and the Football Association decided to kick the club while they were down, issuing a 30 point deduction for the start of the season that saw Luton Town exit league football.

The five years in Non-League football were not enjoyable, as a club like Luton Town should never have been in that situation. Naturally, the FA were blamed- they still are. In the Kenilworth Road stands you’ll hear the fans express their discontent with the governing body. Play-Off final defeats were experienced and Luton could never quite go all the way, struggling in a league that has risen in popularity but still bizarrely offers just two promotion places.

Now though, the Hatters time in Non-League football is over. It’s great for the fans, the club, the county and even football league football as a whole. Luton Town’s average attendance this season has been higher than the majority of clubs in the third and fourth divisions of English football- as well as Championship side Yeovil Town.

Luton Town are a club that have packed out Wembley, displaying their passion in every opportunity that they can. Last year, England was reminded about the forgotten club as they embarked on a terrific FA Cup run that included knocking out Premier League Norwich City. The first Non-League club to do so in a generation. No club deserves the return to league football like Luton Town do, the club will show their prowess throughout next season.

Many will have you believe that Luton Town supporters are not a nice bunch, as references to Luton’s EDL group and the embarrassing scenes shown against York City a few years back hurt the clubs integrity. However, they’ve shown this season that they are amongst the best in the land, selling thousands of seats week after week and helping to promote Conference football to the minds of many.

The majority of Conference clubs have fans that also adopt a Premier League side, often with the Conference side being the second-choice club that is local. Luton, however, is different. With a rich history and fan base, their are many proud supporters who are one-club fans. Luton is their pride and joy, deserving the return to League football more than anyone else.

Whether Luton Town will rise to the heights that we once witnessed them remains to be seen but Luton, with the support of their fan base, shouldn’t be returning to Non-League football anytime soon, if ever. The club has had some dark times but the seeds are starting to be sown, with the success clear for all to see. With a capable manager, a squad of players full of ability and passion, added to a fan base that is one of the most faithful in the land, Luton Town can compete over the coming years.

There’s not many, if at all, that have been through what Luton Town have. It’s been a difficult ride but the end results can finally be enjoyed, while the club now looks in a much more stable position than it once was. The Hatters are back and the Football League should be thankful, though the opposition fans and clubs should also be concerned about what the Hatters will bring to the frame.
