Widely considered the greatest footballer ever to play the beautiful game, Brazilian legend Pele has given a boost to English football by stating he would play for Arsenal if given the chance.
The multiple-time World Cup winner, who scored over 1000 career goals, never played for a European side but that would likely be different in the modern era; with fellow South Americans Neymar, Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez all starring on the continent.
During an interview with The Telegraph, Pele was asked which side he would play for these days, if given the chance, and whilst stating Barcelona is a similar fit to the Santos and Brazil side he played with in the 1970’s, Arsenal were also a solid choice.
“Today Barcelona. They are the same style as Santos and Brazil of my day. Almost the same style.”
“Arsenal is a good team to play with. I would play for Arsenal if I had a chance.”
Arsenal have scored just seven goals so far this season in all competitions and there’s no doubt that the Gunners would kill to have a forward of Pele’s calibre; but it’s likely football will never see a player like him ever again.
